30th World Cheese Awards 2017

Success for Emmi cheeses at the World Cheese Awards

Lucerne, 27 November 2017More than 3,000 cheeses from 31 countries were judged at this year’s Word Cheese Awards in London. Emmi presented to the jury a selection of cheeses from Switzerland and some cheese specialities from the US and the Netherlands. These were given a total of 16 awards. Once again, the cave-aged KALTBACH cheeses were successful, winning two gold medals and a silver.

Emmi is the largest cheese trader in Switzerland. The range includes cheese that the company produces itself at various production facilities as well as cheese that it purchases (annually over 30,000 tonnes). This cheese normally comes from commercial cheese dairies and is then matured, refined and packaged by Emmi.

Emmi markets its cheeses across the world. Participating in competitions – for example, in the annual World Cheese Awards – is one of the measures being taken to raise the profile of foreign trade and consumption of the company’s cheeses. Emmi’s US subsidiaries have also been competing against Europe for a number of years.

Awards for Emmi cheeses from Switzerland and the US

The 2017 edition of the cheese industry’s largest international competition saw Emmi’s cheese specialities win a total of 16 awards. The two gold medals for KALTBACH Le Gruyère AOP, produced by former award winners Martial Bovay from Vaulion and Philippe Denervaud from Villaz St. Pierre, were especially pleasing. The popular Scharfe Maxx from Käserei Studer in eastern Switzerland was awarded yet another gold medal. The KALTBACH Emmentaler AOP from Käserei Ganzenberg in Rohrbachgraben won silver.

Emmi Roth USA and the goat’s cheese specialists from Cypress Grove (USA) and Bettinehoeve (NED) also competed against their international peers for the third time. Their nine awards are a clear sign that their cows’, goats’ and ewes’ milk cheese specialities are of the very highest quality.

The World Cheese Awards have been held annually since 1988 and have been the largest international competition of this type since 2005.
