Emmi is the largest cheese trader in Switzerland. The range includes cheese that the company produces itself at various production facilities as well as cheese that it purchases (annually over 30,000 tonnes). This cheese normally comes from commercial cheese dairies and is then matured, refined and packaged by Emmi.
Emmi markets its cheeses across the world. Participating in competitions – for example, in the annual World Cheese Awards – is one of the measures being taken to raise the profile of foreign trade and consumption of the company’s cheeses. Emmi’s US subsidiaries have also been competing against Europe for a number of years.
Awards for Emmi cheeses from Switzerland and the US
The 2016 edition of the cheese industry’s largest international competition saw Emmi’s cheese specialities win a total of 18 awards. The two gold medals for Der Scharfe Maxx and Maxx 365, which is matured for 365 days, from Käserei Studer in eastern Switzerland were particularly pleasing. Alter Schweizer, a hard cheese ripened for ten months, took home a silver medal to Hatswil. The cave-aged cheeses KALTBACH Le Gruyère AOP (Käserei Courgenay and Käsereigenossenschaft Moudon), KALTBACH Extra Tasty (Emmi) and KALTBACH Creamy and Tasty (Emmi) won a total of four medals.
The traditional Emmentaler AOP and Le Gruyère AOP are guarantees of success in Emmi’s range. A silver medal was awarded to Le Gruyère AOP from Käserei Dénervaud in Villaz-St-Pierre, while Emmentaler AOP from Käser Peter Röthlisberger in Meikirch won bronze again as it did last year.
Emmi’s US subsidiaries Emmi Roth USA and Cypress Grove faced international competition for the second time. Their nine awards are a clear sign that their cows’, goats’ and ewes’ milk cheese specialities are of the very highest quality.
The World Cheese Awards have been held annually since 1988 and have been the largest international competition of this type since 2005.
